Where can you play the Assassin’s Creed series for free?

Ubisoft's murder simulators have a strong presence on the latest games-on-demand providers

A huge live-service hub. Four new games are on the way. Nobody asked for this TV show. Yes, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise is having a moment, the kind that inspires reflection — and, maybe, a desire to play (or repeat) significant entries in the series.

Assassin’s Creed Origins, the 2017 adventure through ancient Egypt that radically revolutionized how these games function, was declared the unquestioned apex of the franchise by Polygon in September. The majority of responses to the editorial fell into one of two categories: “I agree” (the objectively right response) or “Hold up. Is Assassin’s Creed Origins available on Game Pass?

Indeed, Assassin’s Creed has a large presence on the latest games-on-demand providers. Except for Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, the majority of the series is available via Ubisoft’s own Ubisoft Plus subscription. (For the time being, Ubisoft Plus is only available to PC users.) Ubisoft said in January that the service will be coming to Xbox at an unannounced future date.) Ubisoft Plus normally costs $15 per month, however there is a free trial available until October 10. Just remember to turn off the auto-renewal!

A few of the more modern, RPG-inspired titles are included in Microsoft’s wildly successful Xbox Game Pass program ($10 per month). More are available in Sony’s redesigned PS Plus program, but only if you subscribe to the “Extra” ($15 per month, $100 per year) or “Premium” ($18 per month, $120 per year) levels. Here is the whole list.
