Phantom Liberty, the first expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, will be released in 2023
The return of V and Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand is teased by CD Projekt Red
The expansion Phantom Liberty, the first major downloadable content for Cyberpunk 2077, will be released in 2023, developer CD Projekt Red announced Tuesday alongside the add-on’s first teaser trailer. Phantom Liberty is a new “spy-thriller expansion” for Cyberpunk 2077 set in a new district of Night City, according to CD Projekt Red.
The first Phantom Liberty trailer doesn’t provide much information. V, the player character, swears an oath to “faithfully serve the New United States of America,” as Johnny Silverhand’s voice warns her that this is a poor decision. There’s a brief glimpse of gameplay, but the teaser doesn’t hold out much hope. Separately, actor Keanu Reeves confirmed in a Night City Wire livestream presentation that he will reprise his role as Johnny in the expansion.
Phantom City will be available for Cyberpunk 2077 on Google Stadia, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X – but not, presumably, on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Edgerunners Update, the game’s latest 1.6 patch, will be the final update for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One.
The Edgerunners Update is called after the Netflix animated series that will premiere next week. Patch 1.6 adds anime-inspired equippable gear to Cyberpunk 2077, including the jacket worn by the anime’s protagonist, David Martinez, and a shotgun used by another character from the show. A wardrobe transmog system, cross-platform advancement, and a playable Roach Race minigame arcade cabinet are all included in the update.
Cyberpunk 2077 was published in December 2020, although it was extremely problematic. The game’s developer, CD Projekt Red, spent the better part of the following year bug-fixing and polishing it, which delayed an update for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game and its first expansion. CD Projekt confirmed in April that Cyberpunk 2077’s first expansion would be released in 2023.
