Clay is an excellent decorating block in Minecraft. It serves as the foundation for everything from flower pots to glazed terracotta.
We’ll explain where to get clay and how to cultivate as much clay as you’ll ever need in this Minecraft clay tutorial.
WHERE CAN I FIND CLAY?
Near (or beneath) water is the ideal spot to discover clay on the surface. It may be found in rivers, wetlands, and even on the ocean floor.
Look for a rich cave biome – subterranean tunnels with loads of foliage — below earth. Lush caverns form beneath dark forest and jungle biomes, but never beneath forest, plains, or savanna biomes.
Clay may be mined with any (or no) tool.
HOW TO GROW CLAY
You may produce your own clay from soil instead of searching for lush caverns or traversing the ocean floor.
When you hit soil with a water bottle, it turns into mud. Once you’ve collected enough mud, you’ll need some pointed dripstone, which you may acquire in dripstone cave biomes or grow yourself.

And it in hand, insert a block (we use dripstone blocks for their ease of use) with a pointed dripstone below it. Wait as you place one of your mud bricks on top. That muck will harden into a clay block in no time.
HOW TO USE CLAY
Clay isn’t particularly versatile, although it can be used into several useful (decorative) products. When a clay block is broken, four clay balls are released.
- One brick may be made by putting one clay ball into a furnace. Three bricks may be fashioned into a flower pot, and four can be fashioned into bricks — a brick block.
- Four clay balls can be combined to form a clay block. Throwing the entire block in a furnace produces terracotta. Terracotta may be dyed to produce colored terracotta, which can then be fired again to produce glazed terracotta.
